Consider this:

In simple terms, your Twitter and Facebook accounts serve as broadcast mechanisms for people you already have some connections with. Either they follow you, or have subscribed to your Facebook page by 'liking' it and are therefore easy people for you to market to.  They already know who you are.  But the extra bonus is that some of what you are broadcasting is of interest to many other people who can also find you online by simply searching for topics, phrases and broadcasts via Google searches.  This is why you use Key Words to make it easier for complete strangers outside of your current network to locate you.

Then, you also have your website feature those same keywords so that people searching for them may also find your website.  Each time you refresh your online broadcast machine (ie Twitter and Facebook) your Google search-ability increases just a little.

The other thing you can do with Facebook is to have additional information on your pages that may include photos, product or service information, comments by happy clients and customers, discussions about things relative to your industry or business, and even videos featuring new products or special information you want prospective customers to know about in relation to how you can help them with your products or services.

Updating these things regularly also help your search-ability on the internet.

Let's also remember that most people now go online and type in a few key words (there's that term again) to find out things like - where to eat out in a new town, what the reviews are for a book, what you need to know before building a new deck, how to cook Italian... you name it - people look for all kinds of things on the internet now.  They use Key Words to find information.  That's why you use KEY WORDS to link your broadcasts and Website to your products or services to help broaden the range of your search-ability.

Is it important to be online in your business?  Yes, absolutely - with very few exceptions.  Your local convenience store, or service stations might be one of the only exceptions.  Even grounds care businesses and hairdressers are benefiting from being online and having a social media strategy now.  This is because consumers want to know about reputations and range of services offered and will usually go online to search you up if they hear about you.

How does this fit with your traditional form of marketing?

By telling people that you have a Facebook page or even just directing them to your website, you can get them to seek more information about your special offers, products, services or news flashes.  By mentioning them in your newspaper or radio commercials, or having the website information included on your billboards or car signage, you are inviting people to get even more up-close and personal with you before they pick up the phone. They can find out more about what you can offer and therefore quantify their need to work with you or buy from your company first.  This enables them to establish their expectations of your service, and to understand what makes you the most desirable option (compared to your competitors) for them.

Determining a strong social media strategy takes expertise, but also a willingness to believe this is all a lot easier than you have previously feared.  You can easily set up a Twitter account and Facebook page in moment, but it's worthwhile engaging someone to help make it connect in all the right places so that you really do get a good integration for your marketing plan to work.

When you consider Blogging, You Tube, and Linked In (three other important parts of the Social Media basics that I've not covered here today) and how they also relate to the whole process, then a small investment in time (first) and then maybe financially to get if right will make your overall marketing strategy significantly more powerful.
